Architect or Interior Designer? Who You Need for Your Project in Surat
Mark7 Architects

If you are planning a home, an office or a renovation in Surat, one of the first questions is whether to hire an architect, an interior designer, or both. The two roles overlap, but they are not the same. Choosing the wrong one first can cost you time and money, so here is a plain guide.
What an architect does
An architect designs the building itself: its layout, form, structure, openings, light, ventilation and how it sits on the plot. An architect also prepares the drawings needed for municipal approval, coordinates with the structural engineer and consultants, and can administer construction. If your project involves new construction, structural change, or anything that needs sanctioned drawings, you need a registered architect.
What an interior designer does
An interior designer shapes the inside of a space: room layouts, furniture, joinery (wardrobes, kitchens, storage), lighting, materials, colours and finishes. Interior designers coordinate with electricians, carpenters, painters and suppliers to turn a bare or existing space into a finished, usable one.
Where they overlap
- Both plan how people move through and use a space.
- Both think about light, ventilation, materials and budget.
- Many architects also design interiors, and some interior designers handle minor structural or services changes with an engineer.
Who should you hire first?
- New house or building: start with an architect. The interior is far better when it is planned with the building, not squeezed into it afterwards.
- An apartment or office fit-out: an interior designer is usually enough, as the structure already exists.
- A renovation or remodel: if walls, layouts or services change, involve an architect or engineer; for cosmetic and furniture changes, an interior designer.
- A full project from plot to move-in: a single team that does both avoids gaps and finger-pointing between professionals.
Why one team often works better
When the architecture and the interior are designed together, small things line up: switches and sockets sit where furniture will be, ceilings hide the services, windows frame the right views, and joinery fits the structure. When they are done separately, these details are often fixed on site, at extra cost. This is why we design the building and interior together as one studio.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Is the person registered, and can they show relevant past projects?
- Who will run my project day to day?
- What exactly is included in the fee, and what is charged separately?
- Do you coordinate with the structural engineer, contractor and vendors?
- How are changes handled once design has started?

Frequently asked questions
Can an interior designer get my plan approved? Plan approval from the local authority generally needs drawings from a registered architect or engineer, so check with them before you start.
Is it cheaper to hire only an interior designer? For a fit-out of an existing space, often yes. For a new building, designing the interior separately usually leads to rework and a higher total cost.
Can the same studio do both? Yes, and for many projects it is the simplest route.
